A temporary pacemaker insertion is a critical procedure designed to stabilize heart function in patients experiencing severe slowing of their heart rate or electrical heart blocks. When a temporary pacemaker is needed

A temporary pacemaker supports the heart rate for a limited period while an underlying problem is treated or resolves. It is used when the heart’s own electrical system is failing to maintain an adequate rate — for example in complete heart block, in severe slowing of the heart rate causing symptoms, or where a reversible cause such as a drug effect or an electrolyte disturbance is being corrected.

It is also sometimes used as a precaution around procedures where the conduction system may be temporarily affected.

How it differs from a permanent pacemaker

A temporary system uses a lead passed through a vein to the right side of the heart, connected to an external generator that stays outside the body. Nothing is implanted under the skin, and the system is removed once it is no longer required.

A permanent pacemaker, by contrast, has its generator implanted beneath the skin below the collarbone and is intended to remain. The decision between them depends on whether the rhythm problem is expected to recover.

During and after

The lead is inserted under local anaesthetic with X-ray guidance, and heart rhythm is monitored continuously while the system is in place. Movement may be restricted to keep the lead stable, and the insertion site is checked regularly.
