cardiovascular care.
Dr. Tan Jian Jing, in collaboration with a cardiac electrophysiologist, offers advanced electrophysiological studies and radiofrequency ablation at The Cardio Clinic. These minimally invasive procedures are crucial for accurately diagnosing and effectively treating various heart rhythm disorders. The combination of these diagnostic and therapeutic techniques provides comprehensive care, significantly improving patient outcomes and heart function.
What an electrophysiological study does
An electrophysiological study maps the electrical activity of the heart from the inside. Fine catheters with electrodes are passed through veins into the heart, where they record the electrical signals directly and can pace the heart to reproduce a rhythm disturbance under controlled conditions.
The purpose is to identify precisely where an abnormal rhythm starts or which pathway sustains it — information a surface ECG often cannot provide.
How ablation treats the rhythm
Radiofrequency ablation uses energy delivered through the catheter tip to create a small, controlled area of scar at the site responsible for the abnormal rhythm. Because scar does not conduct electricity, the abnormal circuit or focus is interrupted.
Ablation is used for several rhythm disturbances, including supraventricular tachycardias, accessory pathways, atrial flutter and atrial fibrillation. What is targeted, and how extensive the treatment is, differs considerably between these conditions.
What to expect
The procedure is performed with sedation or general anaesthesia depending on its complexity and expected duration. You may feel your heart racing at points, because reproducing the rhythm is part of the study.
Afterwards, pressure is applied at the access sites and rhythm is monitored. Some awareness of irregular beats in the following weeks is common while the treated area heals, and this is discussed as part of follow-up rather than being unexpected.
Not every rhythm is suitable for ablation, and some conditions may need more than one procedure. Suitability is assessed individually — to discuss it, please contact the clinic.
