What cardiac blood tests measure

Blood tests support cardiac assessment in two distinct ways. Some measure long-term risk factors, while others detect damage or strain that is happening now.

A lipid panel measures total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Raised LDL cholesterol contributes to the build-up of plaque within artery walls over years, which is why it is a central target in prevention. Blood glucose and HbA1c identify diabetes and prediabetes, both of which raise cardiovascular risk.

Markers of strain and injury

Cardiac troponin is released when heart muscle cells are damaged, which is why it is central to the assessment of a suspected heart attack in an emergency setting. Natriuretic peptides rise when the heart chambers are under pressure or stretched, and are used to help assess whether breathlessness is likely to be cardiac in origin.

These markers are always interpreted alongside symptoms, examination and other tests. A single value in isolation rarely settles a question.

Preparation and interpretation

Some tests require fasting beforehand and you will be told if that applies. Certain medications and recent illness can influence results, so it is worth mentioning both when the sample is taken.

Reference ranges vary between laboratories, and a result slightly outside a range is not automatically abnormal for you.
